Age: 30s
History: Jo at the Forever Wiki and Forever at Wikipedia.
Personality:

Opinionated, spunky and driven, Jo Martinez is friendly and approachable, but not without her own demons. We don't know a whole lot about her past, but our first introduction to her is her sneaking out of a guy's house after a drunken one-night stand and slipping into her car.

It is implied that Jo had a pretty normal life and upbringing. She is outspoken and can be sarcastic, and she is always willing to take risks to keep her job and life interesting. She is very open about her emotions, and takes to Henry immediately, probably because of his intelligence, his uncanny knack of gathering useful evidence and her fascination with him. He proves to be a mystery within himself, and Jo is constantly poking and prodding him to open up to her. It isn't long into the show that she starts considering him as her partner, requesting him on cases and turning to him when she needs assistance. Jo is never hesitant to share her own feelings with Henry; for instance, when she kills someone for the first time and isn't entirely sure how to handle it, she turns to Henry for guidance. Months later, when Henry is in the same position after killing a man in self defense, she offers him support and a shoulder to lean on.

The one aspect of life that she is hesitant to share with anyone involves her husband, Sean. A year before she met Henry, Sean died of a sudden heart attack and left Jo a widow. Clearly heartbroken, it is implied that Jo learned to cope with her husband's death through heavy drinking and casual sex. It is her only coping mechanism, as she barely ever mentions him (we don't even learn his name until halfway through the first season) and she reacts very negatively whenever Henry prods. She still wears his wedding ring on a chain around her neck as a constant reminder, and eventually we discover that her guilt lies in the fact that they had a huge fight before Sean died, and the fact that she never had the chance to apologize. While Jo is fairly open with her emotions, her reticence in regards to her late husband definitely illustrates that the pain and guilt of how they parted ways took its toll on her. However, once she starts to work with Henry, her drinking and promiscuity seems to fade, replaced with her desire to work and form a bond with her new partner.

It does seem that Henry brought a certain new life to Jo's experience that helped her step away from the pain that the death of her husband caused. After Henry takes some time off, he returns back to the medical examiner's office unexpectedly, and Jo is more than happy to have him back on the case. When given the choice by the more "down to Earth" M.E. between cleanly wrapping up the case or following Henry's insane leads, Jo happily chooses "insanity." She jumps back into a partnership with him without missing a beat, showing how much she appreciates his fresh outlook not only on their cases, but on life.

Jo also has a close relationship with her partner, Hanson, although we are never really given a deep insight into how strong their relationship is. She seems to have been working with him for a long time, as Hanson knows how deeply her husband's death affected her, but aside from occasional work-place jabs and interactions, we aren't shown much to illustrate the truth depth of their relationship. Jo seems to have a good relationship with Abe, Henry's son, although she has no idea that the older man was in fact raised by Henry. For the time being, she views him as the eccentric old father-figure that Henry lives with, and she doesn't make a lot of assumptions about their relationship. Lucas, Henry's assistant, is someone Jo is amused by, and she views him as an eccentric child who entertains and occasionally helps Henry with their cases.

When it comes to outside of work, we really don't know a lot about what Jo enjoys in her spare time. Due to her interactions with her work associates, I think it is safe to assume that Jo is social, but she also seems to spend a fair amount of time at home and enjoys her down time. She spends her fair share of evenings at the local cop bar, usually with Henry, especially since she now lives alone and doesn't have anything to go home to except for the memories of her late husband. Even with that hanging over her head, Jo has managed to push forward, keep her mind and heart open to new friendships, and continues to grow as a human being. Even though she has stumbled in the past, she is a hard worker and a good friend, and always present for the people that she cares about.

Powers/Special Abilities: Nothing, just an average human here, move along, nothing to see.
River Power: Weakness Detection. Jo will be able to sense physical weaknesses in objects as well as physical or emotional weaknesses in humans. Over time, her ability will become more developed to the point where she can sense them in more subtle things such as relationships or organizations.

Reason for Character Choice: This is Anna's fault. I was interested in watching Forever, and she convinced me to check it out since she had a Henry muse. I did, and was immediately drawn to Jo because she is absolutely my type. However, unlike Kate, she is more forthcoming and honest, and I am looking forward to playing a character who is a little more honest and in touch with her own feelings and the feelings of those around her.
Additional Information: Since this is another modern day NYC cop drama, we intend to talk to Shuri and Sara about Forever existing in the same universe as Castle and the Blacklist.
